What is a Terremoto?

Yesterday was the start of Las Fiestas Patrias in Chile which marks the beginning of Chilean independence celebrations!

As i’m busy writing up some work this month’s post is going to be a recipe…….because……why not?

A Terremoto is a classic Chilean cocktail, invented after the 1985 earthquake in a bar called El Hoyo in Santiago, Chile. The name literally means ‘earthquake’ and there was a surge of popularity for the drink after the 2010 earthquake (a whopping 8.8 magnitude quake).

Here it is in all it’s glory:

Looks intriguing right!? Now….how do I make one?

The ingredients of a Terremoto usually include: pineapple ice cream (yes, you heard that correctly), wines and grenadine. Though I have come across a few different variations, below is a simple recipe taken from here:

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of grenadine
  • 1/2 cup white wine (in Chile they usually use white pipeƱo wine)
  • 1/2 cup of sparkling wine
  • 3 scoops of pineapple ice cream

As with the most deadly drinks, it tastes a lot like juice, so….proceed with caution.
